The best way to prevent skin cancer and photoaging is to protect your skin from the sun. Here are some sun safety tips that really do work:
- Seek shade: Stay indoors, stay in the shade, or use a sun umbrella particularly between the hours of 10AM and 4PM when the sun is at its highest point in the sky.
- Sunscreen: Every day you should wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 or higher. One ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen should be used to cover the entire body, and sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or immediately after water exposure or excessive sweating.
- Cover up with UV-protective clothing, a broad-rimmed hat, and UV-protective sunglasses.
- Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreen should be used on infants over the age of 6 months.
- See your dermatologist yearly for a professional skin examination.
- Avoid tanning and UV tanning salons. Pale is the new tan!
